Utah has been one of the hottest teams out of the gate, opening 2-0 with a pair of dominant victories, while New Jersey enters after getting hammered 6-0 by the New York Islanders on Saturday. Utah Hasn’t Just Won — It Has Dominated
Utah opened the season by shutting out Chicago 6-0. If that looked like a one-night explosion, the Mammoth followed it by beating Columbus 4-1 on Saturday.
That gives Utah a 2-0 record with a 10-1 combined scoring margin. It’s an extremely small sample, but that’s about as convincing a two-game start as a team can produce. The Mammoth have shown they can generate offense while giving opponents very little in return.
This is the first spot where I really don’t want last season’s numbers to overshadow what is happening right now. Utah is playing confident hockey, and the Mammoth are heading into New Jersey against a team that just endured the exact opposite experience.

New Jersey Has to Flush the Islanders Game Quickly
The Devils’ 6-0 loss to the Islanders on Saturday was ugly. New Jersey actually got through the first period scoreless, but the game completely unraveled afterward. The Islanders scored three times during the second period and added three more in the third.
New Jersey wasn’t simply unlucky around the net. The Devils were shut out despite putting 37 shots on goal, and the defensive structure collapsed once the Islanders broke through. It’s the kind of game a team needs to forget quickly because dwelling on it accomplishes nothing with another opponent arriving Tuesday.
The matchup doesn’t offer much relief. Utah has scored 10 goals in two games and allowed one. New Jersey should be highly motivated to respond at home, but motivation alone isn’t enough reason to oppose a team playing this well.
Utah Mammoth vs New Jersey Devils Picks and Predictions
Pick: Utah Mammoth Moneyline
Utah is my favorite side among these five games. The Mammoth are 2-0 and have outscored Chicago and Columbus 10-1, while New Jersey is coming directly off a 6-0 home-opening loss to the Islanders. Eventually Utah will cool off, but I’m not interested in betting that it happens here. Until somebody forces the Mammoth into a genuinely difficult game, I’ll ride the current form.
Pick: Under 6 Goals
I’m pairing Utah with the Under. That might seem strange given the Mammoth have scored 10 goals already, but Utah has also allowed only one. New Jersey was just shut out despite generating 37 shots, and the Devils’ offense has yet to show enough consistency to assume it contributes three or four goals here. Utah winning something like 3-1 or 4-1 fits what we’ve seen through the opening week.
