Winnipeg Jets vs Detroit Red Wings Picks and Predictions for Sunday October 4 2026
The Winnipeg Jets visit the Detroit Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan, on Sunday, October 4, 2026. Puck drop is scheduled for 1:00 PM ET. Both teams are trying to establish themselves during the opening week of the NHL season, and neither got the result it wanted on Friday. Winnipeg suffered a 4-3 overtime loss to Boston, while Detroit was shut out 2-0 by the New York Rangers.
That makes this an interesting early-season matchup because both clubs have already shown different concerns. Winnipeg generated enough offense to push Boston into overtime but couldn’t protect its advantage late. Detroit had considerably more trouble generating offense against New York and enters Sunday still looking for its first goal of the season.

Winnipeg Opens With an Overtime Loss
Winnipeg earned a point in its opener but will undoubtedly feel it left another one on the table. The Jets carried a 3-2 advantage into the closing minutes against Boston before allowing the tying goal and eventually falling 4-3 in overtime.

The positive is that Winnipeg immediately demonstrated it can produce offense. Scoring three times against Boston wasn’t enough to get the win, but it was a much better offensive showing than Detroit produced in its opener.
The concern is Winnipeg’s schedule. Sunday’s afternoon matchup comes during a demanding opening stretch, and the Jets will have another game Monday. That makes game management particularly important. Winnipeg doesn’t want this becoming an end-to-end track meet that forces it to burn through energy before another quick turnaround.
Detroit Needs an Offensive Response
Detroit’s season began with a frustrating 2-0 loss against the Rangers. The Red Wings weren’t blown out, but getting shut out at home immediately raises the importance of generating better offensive pressure in Game 2.
The defensive performance wasn’t bad. Allowing only two goals ordinarily gives a team an opportunity to earn points. Detroit simply couldn’t turn its possessions and chances into anything on the scoreboard.
Home ice gives the Red Wings another opportunity to correct that Sunday. Detroit also swept its two meetings with Winnipeg last season, including a 2-1 victory at Little Caesars Arena. That history isn’t nearly as important as current form, but it does show Detroit has recently been comfortable playing this opponent.
Winnipeg Jets vs Detroit Red Wings Picks and Predictions
Pick: Detroit Red Wings Moneyline
Detroit’s offensive performance Friday was disappointing, but I’m not ready to overreact to one shutout. The Red Wings allowed only two goals and now get another home game against a Winnipeg team coming off an overtime contest. Winnipeg’s demanding early schedule is another small advantage for Detroit. The Jets can certainly score enough to win this game, but Detroit should have opportunities against a Winnipeg defense that surrendered four in its opener. I’ll back the Red Wings to bounce back at home.
Pick: Under 6 Goals
This is the portion of the matchup I like most. Detroit’s first game produced only two total goals, and its inability to score could carry over against Winnipeg. Meanwhile, the Red Wings showed they can keep a game relatively controlled defensively. Winnipeg scored three Friday, but an early Sunday start following an overtime game isn’t necessarily an ideal setup for another high-tempo performance. If the total is available at 6, I’ll take the under.
Final Picks: Detroit Red Wings Moneyline and Under 6 Goals
